Low Back Pain and Sciatica

If you ask anyone who works in healthcare at emergency rooms or urgent care units you will hear them say that low back pain and sciatica are some of the most common problems, they encounter each year. People with low back pain may experience pain or weakness every day, they may be the person where their back “goes out” a couple times a year or they could be the person who ends up having back surgery and their back still hurts several months after the surgery. In most cases the low back and sciatic nerve pain will continue to worsen because they have not received the correct treatment.

Patients often describe the pain of sciatica as a slight discomfort to an extreme, unbearable pain. Sciatic nerve pain can radiate down the lower half of the body in different areas – from the butt, down the leg and into the foot. Many times, the pain will come and go with different positions or activities with some being worse than others. As time goes by, people tend to go through periods of pain that typically will get worse as the problem is not corrected.

Almost everyone knows someone with low back pain, and you may have heard them say – all they did was bend over to pick up a pencil or get a load of clothes out of the dryer and they were hit with unbearable pain. They don’t understand how an easy task that they have done so many times before could have caused them so much pain. The reality is that their problem has probably been there for a long time and has been getting worse over the years. That small movement just happened to be the last straw.

The pelvis and lumbar spine are usually the areas that are associated with a low back or sciatic issues. This is where the sciatic nerve branches out of the spine to the lower parts of the body. So, it makes sense that this part of the body needs to be corrected and properly aligned. This area of the spine is very complicated. Our doctors at the Vitalign Spine Clinic are trained to identify and correct problems specific to the lumbar spine and pelvis.

In a lot of cases, especially those where a patient has tried many other forms of care and not gotten better, the root cause of the problem is NOT in their low back. This unfortunately is what makes low back problems so frustrating for so many people. But the good news is that this is why we have such good results with low back or sciatic nerve pain here at the Vitalign Spine Clinic. Our doctors will look at the big picture and not just the site of pain or problem. Most people don’t realize this but body balance and posture are regulated by the nerve system at the top of the spine and into the skull, in an area known as the brainstem. Pressure on the brainstem/nervous system at the top of the spine can cause a full body postural distortion leading to spinal imbalances, which leads to nerve pressure and ultimately can lead to pain all the way down the spine. Our doctors measure and correct these imbalances throughout the entire spine which in most cases are starting from a structural imbalance at the top causing pressure on the brainstem. Once full spine balance is achieved, the body can finally start to heal in a correct position and the person can become pain free even if they have degeneration, bone spurring and disc problems.
